“My best friend – okay this one is so important. Choose wisely, I got really lucky with mine. My best friend is funny, intelligent, creative, beautiful, and successful, and very kind. She’s also impulsive, frustrating, complicated, childish, but I would not have her any other way. And the best part about Brooke Davis is that she always puts friends first. So if you are ever in any kind of trouble, you know who to call. I can’t think of anyone I’d rather have watching over you”Peyton Sawyer, One Tree Hill
If you are anything like me, you loved some good early 2000s tv. One Tree Hill, Gilmore Girls, Veronica Mars, the list goes on and on, and even though I didn’t watch them during the early 2000s, I have binged them on Netflix and Hulu multiple times.
One of the reasons that I love these shows are the strong friendships between the characters. My favorite television friendship of ALL time would have to be Peyton and Brooke from One Tree Hill. They are so close and have been through so much together; I love it! When Peyton was speaking to her future child about best friends and said the above quote, all I could think of was my best friend.
My best friend’s name is Katelyn, or as I refer to her, My Katelyn. I met Kate when we started first grade together. I was the new kid at school and she was the first kid in class to come and sit with me. We have been friends since… twenty something years later still best friends and she is the Maid of Honor in my upcoming wedding. Over the years we have grown together and apart, but we always seemed to circle back to each other.
Kate and I were friends from first grade up through middle school, we had sleepovers, went on family vacations together, did gymnastics and girl scouts together, everything. When we ended up going to different high schools we drifted apart a little bit, we didn’t see each other as often and we weren’t involved in the same activities anymore. After high school we were lucky enough to end up going to the same college. We actually ended up living together during sophomore year.
This year changed my life… really. Living with Katelyn changed me completely, I came out of my shell, we grew inseparable, we did everything together. We spent twenty out of the twenty four hours a day together most days. The only time we really spent apart was when we were in class. We would have wine nights and watch chick flicks, we ended every night watching Friends together while we were going to bed, we ate almost every meal together, we went out together on the weekends, we even grocery shopped together.
Katelyn is the person who knows the most about me in the world. She knows all my secrets and was there through my awkward middle school years haha. We have been through it all together, she was there for me when my grandmother died and I couldn’t get out of bed, she was there for me when I was figuring out how I could start my life over again in a new state where I knew no one, and she was there for me when I got engaged.
Life is a lot harder now, Katelyn got a really great job offer a little over a year ago in California, across the United States from me (in Pennsylvania)! We went from having dates and wine nights together once a week to her being two thousand five hundred miles away. But, I still think back to the Peyton quote all the time, because my best friend is funny, intelligent, creative, beautiful, and successful, and very kind. She’s also impulsive, complicated, and childish (in a good way), but I would not have her any other way. She is one in a million and I cannot wait for her to stand up and give what I am sure will be a ridiculously amazing maid of honor toast. I also can’t wait to fly those two thousand five hundred miles to see her in June for four days!
